The Cambridge English Dictionary defines a test as a way "to find out or show how good someone or something is" (Cambridge Dictionary). That is exactly what a used amp demands: a short, deliberate session that shows you whether the thing works, not whether you like its voice yet. Ten minutes of structured listening and knob-turning will tell you more than an hour of casual noodling.

Sellers respect a buyer who checks things properly, and a good amp survives the scrutiny. A bad one reveals itself quickly. What should you check before you even plug in?
Start with the outside. Look at the tolex, the corners, and the grille cloth, not for beauty but for history. A torn grille or dented corner tells you the amp has been knocked around, which matters because speakers and tubes dislike impacts. Check the back panel for missing screws and loose handles.
Smell matters too. A burnt or fishy odor inside a tube amp often points to overheated transformers or resistors. Musty smells suggest damp storage, which corrodes tube sockets and switch contacts. Neither smell is a dealbreaker on its own, but both raise the price of what you should offer.
Ask the seller two questions before anything else: how long they have owned it, and whether it has been serviced. A recent receipt from a repair shop is worth real money. Silence on service history is information as well.
How do you test the power and preamp tubes?
In a tube amp, the tubes are the parts most likely to fail and among the cheapest to replace. So test them for function, not perfection. Power the amp on with the guitar plugged in and the volume low, then watch and listen.
Check the glass of each tube through the back panel or grille. A healthy tube may glow; what you are looking for is trouble. A tube with a milky white or silvery coating inside the glass has lost its vacuum. That tube is dead or dying. A strong rattle or ringing when you tap the amp gently, heard through the speaker, is called microphonics. It means the tube's internal structure has loosened, and it will pick up vibration and feed it back into your signal.
Then play at a modest volume and listen for odd behavior as the amp warms up. Cutting out, sudden volume drops, or a crackle that comes and goes often traces to a failing tube or a dirty socket. The good news: tubes are replaceable. Price the cost of a full retube into your offer, and a tube-shaped problem becomes a negotiation point rather than a walk-away.
What about the pots, switches, and jacks?
Pots are the rotary controls behind every knob, and they are a classic used-amp failure point. Turn every knob slowly through its full travel while the amp is on. Listen for scratchy, crackling, or jumping sounds. A dirty pot is usually fixable with contact cleaner, so treat it as a small deduction, not a rejection. A pot that cuts the signal out entirely, or a channel switch that does nothing, is a bigger concern.
Work the input jacks and any footswitch jacks by wiggling the plug gently. The signal should stay solid. Loose jacks on the chassis can mean cracked solder joints, which a tech can fix but which signal rough transport.
Flip every switch several times. Listen for loud pops. Some pop is normal on old amps, especially on standby switches. Loud, irregular cracks are not.
How do you judge the speaker?
The speaker is the part of a used amp that is hardest to replace cheaply, and the part that shapes the sound most. Play single notes up and down the neck at low volume first. Listen for buzzing, which can mean a torn cone, a loose dust cap, or a voice coil rubbing. A rub sounds like a raspy edge on certain notes, often in one place on the neck.
Then press lightly on the grille over the cone with the amp off. The cone should move smoothly and return. A grinding feel or scraping sound points to coil damage. Check that the speaker label or date stamp is visible if you can; a swapped-in replacement speaker is common and not always bad, but you deserve to know.
One honest gap: you cannot fully judge a speaker's condition in a shop setting. A cone can sound fine at low volume and fail under sustained high power. If the price allows, factor in a possible speaker replacement when you think about the deal.
How much hum is normal, and when is it a red flag?
Every amp hums a little. The question is how much, and whether the hum changes when you turn things. With the guitar's volume rolled to zero, listen at idle. A low, steady hum is normal in most tube designs. A loud 60-cycle drone that swells as the amp warms up suggests filter capacitors going weak, a common aging issue and a real repair bill.
Now sweep the volume and tone controls with the guitar still at zero. If the hum follows the knob, the noise is in the preamp stage, which is usually a cheaper fix. If it does not, the problem sits in the power section. That distinction changes what you should pay, so make it before you negotiate.
Hum that pulses, crackles under the hum, or comes and goes with temperature is the worst kind. It points to failing components somewhere in the circuit, and only a tech can say how bad.
Which red flags justify walking away?

- Burnt smell or visible scorching around the transformer or board. Overheated transformers are expensive and the damage may be widespread.
- Signs of liquid damage or heavy corrosion inside the chassis. Corrosion spreads, and the repair bill can pass the amp's value.
- A seller who refuses to power it on. If you cannot hear it run, you are buying a parts project at best.
Everything else is arithmetic. Dead tubes, scratchy pots, and a tired speaker are all known quantities with known costs. Deduct them, make your offer, and let the seller decide. If the seller will not budge on price with a dead power tube sitting in the chassis, that tells you something too.
What this means for your purchase
The test sequence is short: inspect, listen cold, listen warm, exercise every control, and price the fixes. Bring your own guitar and cable so you are judging the amp, not unfamiliar gear. Take notes as you go; a written list of issues is your negotiating leverage.
None of these checks establishes how an amp sounds in a band mix, how it holds up over years, or what its resale value will be. A used amp that passes every test here can still disappoint you tonally, and one with a scratchy pot can become a lifelong favorite after a service. The test protects your money. The sound has to win you over on its own.
